Goal: Eliminate backpacks all over the floor, using the small space available on the wall opposite the garage entry.
Process: Paint wall. Purchase one smallish prefab bookcase (ordered from Walmart.com) – about six feet high and only nine inches deep. Assemble, but only utilize the center support shelf and one additional shelf (This creates the lunch box cubby. When the kids are older, this will have to be eliminated to accommodate the longer coats.). Screw 1×3 boards to studs. These boards are the attachment points for coat hooks and backpack hooks, and the bookcase is secured to them at the sides with brads.
Use random casing and boards to create a small shelf and chair rail. Use other materials to create message board. Magazine files were already owned. Additional hooks under the shelf hold my purse and diaper bag.
After! So far this has worked out great. The kids even *gasp* put their things away when they come home.
